Confused With All Those Window Terms?

If you’re shopping for windows or doors you’ve probably run across some terms that you are not familiar with. Everything from R-Values and U-Values to solar heat gain coefficients. These terms are great to know when it comes time to do window replacement, so we here at FAS Windows and Doors are going to share our knowledge with you.

R-Value- The capacity of an insulating material to resist heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power

U-Value- a measure of the heat transmission through a building part (as a wall or window) or a given thickness of a material (as insulation) with lower numbers indicating better insulating properties

Solar Heat Gain Coefficients- The percentage of solar heat that is absorbed vs. reflected when it contacts a window

ENERGY STAR label- Energy Star is an international standard for energy efficient consumer products. It was first created as a United States government program by the Clinton Administration in 1992.

We hope this information helps you when doing your research on new windows and doors. If you should have any questions please feel free to contact us.
