What is a U-Value?

Katie Pettit  Katie, the Go-to Girl for Windows, writes...

The U-value is an assigned number that states a object's (or window's) ability to keep inside a building warm or cool. The U-value states the amount of thermal energy transported through a window. For homeowners residing in a place with a warmer climate like Florida, the U-value is an indicator of how long a home can be kept cold.

Good U-values are an effective way to maintain the amount of energy used to keep a home at an ideal temperature. The larger the U-value, the greater amount of heat will flow through an object such as a window. An efficient window has a low U-value.

uvalue high
uvalue low

Technically, this value is reached through the use of the formula W/( m²K). In this formula, W refers to thermal energy in Watts, and m²K refers to window with the size of 1 square meter [m²] at a temperature difference of 1 Kelvin [K] (=1ºC). Without remaining too technical, a beneficial U-value, to put it simply, should be less than 1.0 W/(m²K). Of course, this number can be obtained through glass and other window energy efficiency options.

From Our Customers

We had a bad experience with a previous door installer/retailer. Then we heard good things on the radio about FAS so we went to see them in their warehouse and we were impressed with both the product and the people. We bought two sets of French doors and had them installed. We were also able to customize our lock and glass selection, as well as the decorative treatment of the doors and it worked very well. Their sales rep was very personable. He called in response to our call to set up a time and he arrived on time. He was very knowledgeable and very enthusiastic, and we very much enjoyed the opportunity to talk to him. He was certainly the first contact in our home that helped convince us to try them out.

Their installation team was very good and very professional. They came out, measured, and they showed up with the doors and the doors fit, which was nice. They had the materials they needed and they cleaned up afterwards. All in all, we were very pleased with the experience. They did a great job. FAS has a higher price but there was great value. Their quality’s terrific. They did a great follow-up as well, after the work was done. They called and verified if we were satisfied with the work, up to the permit inspection. They took care of taking off the labels and so forth, which were required to be let down for the permit.
